Which Permafrost mod route fits your goal?
This comparison uses the authors' descriptions, not a performance ranking. Each author describes their own project; that does not independently verify that it works on your current build.
| Your goal | Route to check | Decision and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Find resources and locations | Browser map | Use the map guidance first. A reference map avoids installing a loader; it is not live character tracking. |
| Skip the opening logos and narration | KumasanGames' No Intro | The author requires UE4SS and says shader compilation is preserved. Skipping the intro is not a fix for loading or GPU crashes. |
| Use a mod that explicitly requires the Permafrost Mod API | champandchris' DLL loader | Check the release notes before choosing a DLL mod. The 1.3.0 notes restrict loading to V11 diagnostics and skip older mods, despite the broader general description. |
| Change items, inventory or weather in a solo world | JLEV's Internal Mod Menu | The author labels version 1.0.0 for game build 0.44.3.4666-Stable, single-player only. Do not choose it for a shared co-op session. |
UE4SS and the DLL API have different instructions
No Intro author instructions (external site) specify UE4SS 3.0.1 in the game's executable directory, then the mod archive in the main game folder with its folder structure preserved. That is a mod-specific requirement, not a universal installation recipe.
The Permafrost ModLoader API author page (external site) describes a separate launcher and DLL folder. Its hotfix notes narrow compatibility: a working loader does not mean an older gameplay DLL will load.
At the check date, the API page displayed version 1.2.4 while its changelog included 1.3.0. This page does not identify a latest compatible download. Match the archive, its release notes and your installed build before proceeding.
Before installing or updating
- Locate your actual installation through Steam: right-click Permafrost, then Properties → Installed Files → Browse. Avoid relying on a default drive path.
- Back up your world saves and existing mod configuration outside the game folder, following the chosen mod's backup instructions.
- Confirm the mod's game build, loader requirement and single-player or co-op scope. Read the matching archive instructions before copying files.
- If the game starts crashing after a mod change, stop adding mods and follow the author's uninstall instructions. For problems in an unmodified game, use the developer crash workarounds.
Can these mods be used in co-op?
The API author's multiplayer test covers the framework. Individual mods still need their own compatibility evidence for host and guest.
JLEV’s Internal Mod Menu description (external site) explicitly says single-player only and says the menu turns itself off when other players join. Use the normal hosting and joining guide for a shared world. The API's public release does not include dedicated-server functionality.
Common questions
Are these official mods?
These are community projects. This guide makes no claim of official mod support or developer endorsement.
Do I need a mod to use an interactive map?
No. A browser reference map is available without modifying the game. Start there if you only want to look up a location.
Which mod is best?
Choose by the task: a browser map for location lookup, No Intro for startup presentation, or a compatible community framework for a specific supported mod. There is no tested universal best choice here.
